New York City’s Open Culture program might not be Covid-19 safe and Actors’ Equity has taken issue. The newly launched program which allows for outdoor street performances has been called out by Actors’ Equity for failing to meet their minimum standards for wages or pandemic-era safety protocols.
The City’s website describes the Open Culture program as a “new permit type available from the Mayor’s Street Activity Permit Office allowing for ticketed performances. Arts and cultural institutions, as well as entertainment venues, will have the opportunity to secure a permit for socially distanced performances at over 100 street locations throughout all five boroughs.”
Their website lists theaters, music venues, and comedy clubs as the targets for these outdoor performances and further allows the performances to be filmed or recorded without a film permit.
